How Doug Makes His Stunning Wood Bowls!
After picking a piece of wood he removes the top and bottom (to create flat surfaces) of what will become the bowl. Then puts it in a plastic bag in a dry area of the shop to dry. There he will take it out of the bag everyday sometimes twice and turn the bag inside out to keep the surface dry that is near the wood. This process allows the wood to dry but not too quickly to prevent cracking.
After a couple of days, he starts shaping the bowl, but not too much at a time to prevent cracking again. Then it goes back into a bag for a week or so and gets bag removed daily until there is very little sign of moisture build up in the bag. At that time, he removes more from the bowl but not to the finished size and then bags it again and observes moisture in the bag. This can take days. Then it is finished and sealed with a bowl sealer.
From there it goes in the house and stays there for 2-3 weeks or more depending on the bowl to see if it cracks or warps. If it warps, he can fix it by reshaping it. If it cracks it is not sold.
